John Collier- Cohn High School, Class of 1942

Obituary for Mr. John Walter Collier Born July 29,1924, Mr. John Walter Collier passed this life on January 27, 2018.

He was preceded in death by mother Mattie Covington Collier, his beloved wife Edna Erle Strickland Collier, brothers Ralph Collier and Frank Collier, sisters Annie Warf, Esther Monticino and Ruby Keene. He is survived by sons Michael (Pat) Collier and Larry (Sue) Collier, grandchildren Teble (Dan) Brewer, Michael Collier, Jr., Curt (Holley) Collier and Stephanie (Shad) Smith, as well as 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. John is a veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific Theatre.

He was also the ultimate railroad man who loved working at the NC&StL, L&N, and Seaboard Systems railroads. Raised during the Depression, living in abject poverty, serving his country and filled with determination and work ethic, he was the perfect example of what the Greatest Generation was all about. His greatest achievement was the love he possessed for his family which he constantly shared with them. He taught us how a woman should be loved and cared for through his love and devotion to our mother. He was truly an amazing man and will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation for John will be held on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 from 4 PM until 8 PM and again on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 from 9 AM until 10 AM at which time a Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be conducted from the Chapel at Spring Hill Funeral Home. Burial will take place at the Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 7931 McCrory Ln, Nashville, TN 37221 at 1:00 PM with military honors. Arrangements by Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery.
